The Academy of Women’s Rights AWR organized several seminars on governance, democracy and political participation for more than 180 women participating in the Academy. These seminars were conducted in the four LOST centers of Baalbeck, Ein, Beitshema and Hermel. Many professional and experienced activistshelped women to understand more the complicated process of political participation and how would women’s political awareness promote their participation and eventually instigate democratic practices.

The impact of these seminars was felt by the increased willingness of some participants to take some leading role in their communities. Mona, from Baalbeck group, is willing to join an active NGO to help promote the culture of women’s rights in the region.

These seminars are part of an advocacy campaign that women are trying to conduct in Baalbeck-Hermel to increase the participation of women in political affairs. These seminars would not have happened without the generous support of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Lebanon. Thanks, Netherlands.

Baalbeck Back to the Agenda of Swiss Embassy

On April 18th 2013, Miss Ruth Flint, the ambassador of Switzerland in Lebanon, paid the Lebanese Organization for Studies and Training a visit at its headquarters in Baalbeck.

 Dr. Lakkis, the president of LOST, joined by LOST members introduced Her Excellency to the current activities implemented where she met trainees from the Academy of Women’s Rights (AWR), a project funded by the embassy of Netherlands.

She also toured the Electronics and Commercial Arts Center (ECC), a center run by LOST.

After signing on the guest book, LOST invited her to lunch at Baytna Restaurant.

 زارت سفيرة سويسرا روث فلينت مركز الجمعية اللبنانية للدراسات والتدريب في بعلبك، حيث التقت رئيس الجمعية الدكتور رامي اللقيس وأعضاء الهيئة الإدارية ووفدا من سيدات أكاديمية المرأة، وجالت على مركز معهد الالكترونيك والفنون الجميلة ECC، ووقعت على السجل الذهبي للجمعية.

كما لبت فلينت في ختام جولتها دعوة الجمعية اللبنانية للدراسات والتدريب إلى مأدبة غداء في مطعم بيتنا.

The 7th Annual Major Fair at LOST- Centers. An opportunity to seek higher education, April 2013.

The Lebanese Organization of Studies & Training organized the 7th major fair at three of its branches: Baalbeck, Ein and Beit Shama with the participation of 8 universities.

The exhibition was attended by more than 2000 students from 45 high schools in Baalbeck- Hermel.

All the participated universities explained the available majors, administrative procedures and scholarship schemes.

LOST organized such activities every year in an attempt to help students of Baalbeck- Hermel region to become more aware and informed about the different academic majors to be able to choose the right one. LOST offered these students the chance to acquire the English language skills needed (TOEFL/ SAT/EEE) to pass entrance exams at these universities.

معرض الاختصاصات الجامعية لسابع في الجمعية اللبنانية للدراسات بعلبك

نظمت "الجمعية اللبنانية للدراسات والتدريب" في مركزها في مدينة بعلبك ، معرض "الاختصاصات الجامعية السابع"، بمشاركة جامعات ومعاهد AUST، AUCE، LIU، AUL، UFL، CNAM، الجامعة الإسلامية، الجامعة اللبنانية - كلية العلوم، مركز الالكترونيك والفنون التجارية ECC، المركز اللبناني لتعليم اللغة الانكليزية والكومبيوتر LCEC.

وأوضح مدير المعرض وسام رعد "ان 1850 طالبا وطالبة من منطقة بعلبك الهرمل استفادوا من المعرض الذي تم تنفيذه في ثلاث مناطق هي: بعلبك، العين وبيت شاما، وذلك من خلال التعرف على الجامعات واختيار الاختصاصات الجامعية الملائمة لإمكانياتهم وتوجهاتهم".

ولفت إلى "ان الجمعية قامت بنقل جميع الطلاب من مدارسهم الى مراكز المعرض ومن ثم اعادتهم الى المدرسة دون اي تكلفة."

Partnership between NGOs and governmental bodies, a powerful measure to prevent corruption.April 17th 2013, LOST Hermel

On April 17th 2013, the Lebanese Organization for Studies and Training (LOST) organized a lecture entitled “Corruption in Lebanon” at its branch in Hermel in the presence of NGO representatives, the media, and some social figures. The main lecturer, Dr. Said Issa from the Lebanese Transparency Association (LTA), offered a comprehensive definition of corruption as the “misuse of authority for personal and private benefit. It occurs when an incumbent of a public post or a person with authority exploits decisions or information for the advantages of his own tribe, group, or relatives.” He then attributed corruption to the current political context showing its major facets namely money laundry and trafficking. Capitalizing on the Lebanese government’s ratification of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), Issa proposed a strengthened partnership between civil society organizations and governmental bodies as a powerful practical measure to prevent corruption.

ندوة بعنوان مكافحة الفساد في الجمعية اللبنانية للدراسات والتدريب في الهرمل

نظمت الجمعية اللبنانية للدراسات والتدريب فرع الهرمل ندوة حول الفساد للدكتور سعيد عيسى (الجمعية اللبنانية للشفافية).
في البداية قدم الندوة خالد الطشم الذي رحب بالدكتور عيس باسم جمعية الدراسات وشرح اهمية التوعية على محاربة الفساد خصوصا لدى الشباب.

ثم استهل الدكتور سعيد عيسى الندوة بمقدمة عن الفساد معتبرا انه سوء استخدام السلطة لتحقيق مكاسب شخصية وخاصة، بحيث يتم ذلك من خلال استغلال الوظيفة العامة والسلطة  والمعلومات. واعاد الفساد إلى السياق السياسي الحالي  الذي يظهرجوانب رئيسية له من خلال غسيل الأموال والاتجار والاستفادة من تصديق الحكومة اللبنانية على اتفاقية الأمم المتحدة لمكافحة الفساد (UNCAC).
واقترح عيسى تعزيز الشراكة بين منظمات المجتمع المدني والهيئات الحكومية كإجراء عملي قوي لمنع الفساد.

Memorandum of understanding between LOST and Tourathkom.com

On April 10th, 2013, LOST signed a MOU with Tourath.com, a local NGO which works on reviving cultural heritage and tourism as a tool of conflict resolution by resorting to the past to seek consensus. Tourath also runs a tourism-promoting website. In this MOU, both NGOs has agreed to utilize this website to post all news pertaining to peace building unit activities and link it to LOST’s website. 

Alternatively, LOST will help Tourath sustain their website, build the NGO capacity, offer logistical and operating guidance, and develop joint projects related to the same peace building.

LOST Launches Peace Building Unit in Baalbeck.

On March 2nd, 2013, the Lebanese Organization of Studies and Training held a press conference at its headquarters in Baalbeck to announce the establishment of the “Peace Building Unit”supported by GIZ. The press conference, covered by all national media, brought together key public figures from Baalbeck-Hermel region to launch this unit. Omar Yasin the governor, Sheikh Bakr Rifai the Mufti, Baalbeck bishop Elias Rahhal, representatives of the general secretary of the Internal Security Forces (ISF) and the National Security, representatives of tribal reconciliation groups, NGOs, the local and national media, and mucktars attended the press conference.

The overall aim of this unit is to put the sectarian conflict issue on the local agenda, create an independent and constructive dialogue among diverse stakeholders, and promote for a culture of peace in the Baalbeck-Hermel region.

Dr. Ramy Lakkis, the founder of LOST, delivered a speech explaining the objectives and processes of tackling the issue of peace building at this critical moment; he asserted that it was the decision of all peoples to go to war, thus it should be the task of all peoples to resort to peace. Lakkis also explained LOST’s interest in this issue as a timely response to the dire consequences of war on development

He also introduced some comprehensive mechanisms to be utilized in the approach; academic in-depth research, social interaction, and partnership with various stakeholders especially governmental bodies and non-governmental organizations are the key mechanisms to be adopted by LOST in its pursuit of a peaceful community.

Mr. Omar Yasin, the governor of Baalbeck, stressed the civil society role embodied in the efforts LOST is exerting in building peace. He also valued their timely response to the conflict issue given all the threats encountering the region currently and acknowledged their well-structured comprehensive action plan.

الجمعية اللبنانية للدراسات والتدريب تطلق وحدة بناء السلم الاهلي

 اطلقت الجمعية اللبنانية للدراسات والتدريب وحدة  "بناء السلم الاهلي" خلال لقاء عقد في مكتب الجمعية في بعلبك حضره قائمقام بعلبك عمر ياسبن ، المطران الياس رحال ، مفتي بعلبك الهرمل الشيخ بكر الرفاعي، الرائد حيدر مظلوم ممثلا مديرية قوى الامن الداخلي ، النقيب حسنين القرصيفي ممثلا مديرية الامن العام وعدد من ممثلي الجمعيات الاهلية والمدنية.

رئيس الجمعية الدكتور رامي اللقيس قدم شرحا للمشروع فاشار الى انه  يهدف الى اشراك الناس في الحياة المدنية ، واول تحدي يواجه التنمية انعدام السلم وحالة الحرب التي يتحول فيها المواطن عدو اخيه. واضاف اننا نرى ان السلم يبدأ النظر اليه من خلال السلامة للجميع .

وتناول اللقيس اليات عمل المشروع من خلال الاليات التالية : الية بحثية اكاديمية ، العمل الاجتماعي وتأكيد التواصل لمنع اصدار الاحكام المسبقة ، العمل التربوي التدريبي التعليمي ، وشراكة الدولة التي تشكل الاساس للنجاح.

بدوره قائمقام بعلبك عمر ياسين اكد على اهمية بناء المجتمع المدني الذي لا يميز بين مواطن واخر ، وان السلم الاهلي يهمنا جميعا لاننا نعيش في قلق دائم خصوصا بعد ان عشنا مراحل الحرب الاهلية ويعيش اخوتنا في سوريا مآسيها اليوم.

واضاف ياسين علينا البحث في كيفية تجنيب اهلنا المآسي وذلك عبر المزيد من التواصل والوقوف جديا في وجه شبح الفتنة المذهبية الطائفية ،واكد الحاجة الى قانون انتخابي لا يميز ويحقق الوحدة الوطنية ،كما اننا بحاجة لاعلام وطني يجمع ولا يفرق واقترح ان يكون التعليم الديني في المدارس عبر اشراف هيئة مشتركة تعني بالقيم الروحية والاخلاقية بعيدة عن التمذهب . وشدد على التركيز على دور المؤسسات الرسمية لتقوم بدورها المطلوب كونها الراعية  للجانب الامني والاجتماعي والصحي والتربوي .
